Water Harvesting Swales

Surface water can be routed in on contour water infiltration ditches often called Swales in the permaculture community. By slowing the surface water down and routing it across the landscape we can hydrate soil and build the water table while reducing on site top soil loss.

High Sierra Permaculture can design and install a surface water management system for you including water harvesting earthworks such as Swales.

Erosion Control

Traditional site design and water management practices focus on directing water off site as quickly as possible, which can lead to erosive situations that remove top soil from your site, harming the watershed below by putting sediment in the water.

Techniques such as Zuni Bowls and One Rock Check Dams can be used in erosive situations to stop the erosion and slow the water to infiltrate the soil and water table on site.

Water Harvesting Roads

Roads can be a huge asset to collection rainwater and directing to beneficial areas on a site or other water harvesting earthworks such as swales – if designed appropriately.

When shaped to direct water off as quickly as possible we can also reduce erosion and decrease road maintenance.
